The Life Span of Zirconia CrownIn previous blog we have discussed what is zirconia crown? The basic material used in zirconia crown with advantages and disadvantages of zirconia crown. In this blog we are going to discuss the most common question asked by patients – how long will my zirconia crown last?
How Long Do Zirconia Crowns Last?As we have known, zirconia crowns are made of a very hard metal substance zirconium dioxide which is nearly impossible to break in natural form. The crown we made from this is very natural, hardest, and more durable among the other types of crowns available. When we talked about the duration a good fitting zirconium crown will last for 10-15 years. Zirconium crowns are long lasting compared to other crowns like PFM which have chances of cracking and chipping off the ceramic layer in some patients. Even the crown can last for lifetime if you follow the instructions provided by the dentist.
Factors Affecting Zirconium Crown Longevity:
- Dental Lab: it is very important to fabricate your crown from a good dental laboratory. With the recent advance there are technologies like CAD-CAM and laser sintering procedure so the lab can fabricate more precise crowns. There are various brands of zirconium crown available with different warranty years so patients can choose according to their convenience.
- Oral Hygiene: it is very important to maintain your oral hygiene if you want to increase the duration of your crown. If the patient does not focus on hygiene there will be changes in gums which ultimately fail your crown. Twice a day brushing with flossing will increase the life of zirconia crowns.
- Avoiding Hard Food: Once the doctor fixes your crown it is very important to avoid very hard food from that side. For example, hard candy, ice cube, very sticky food, crushing of whole walnuts and need to avoid opening any bottle from that tooth.
- Regular Dental Follow-up: Visit your dentist every 6 months for regular cleaning and polishing. It is also advisable to take x-ray when you visit the dentist so we can make sure that everything is fine.
