Gingival flap surgery is a type of gum procedure. The gums are separated from the teeth and folded back
temporarily. Gum surgery indicates to reduce the depth of gum pockets around teeth that have not healed well after deep cleaning. Surgery involves lifting gums back and allows better visualization of deposits on the teeth and hence makes it easier to obtain thorough debridement. The goal of the surgery is to reduce the gum pockets down to a level that is easier for patient as well as dentist to keep the area clean.
It may be recommended for people with moderate or advanced periodontitis. Usually, a treatment that doesn't involve surgery is done first. This is called scaling and root planning. If this treatment does not eliminate the gum infection, gingival flap surgery may be used. It also may be done along with another procedure known as osseous (bone) surgery.
