What should I do after my tooth is knocked out?

If your tooth has completely come off (which is called avulsion of tooth) do not worry but these are the steps that you need to follow.
  • Firstly, you must visit a dentist and carry that avulsed tooth along with you. You should try to reach the clinic within 30 minutes.
  • Do not touch the root of the tooth. Touch only the crown of the tooth. Also clean your hands before touching.
  • Rinse with water gently to remove the outer debris. Do not use soap or detergent powder or cleaning agent to clean that tooth.
  • The tooth should be moist until you reach the dental clinic. You can keep it in mouth if it is going easily to keep it moist but do not press it forcefully. Or else if you are not comfortable to keep it again in mouth then keep it in milk.

You can keep it in a glass of water if nothing is available around you.

Once you have reached the clinic, the doctor will clean the socket to flush the debris. Sometimes, putting on an avulsed tooth is simple or sometimes it is complicated. In some cases, bones also get damaged or fractured. Doctor will place an avulsed tooth in its place and will splint it. This tooth needs root canal treatment to be done.

Doctor will decide whether it should be done on the same day or some other day. Doctors will prescribe medicines also for pain management or swelling.

What if an avulsed tooth cannot be saved?

Missing space can be replaced with different dental treatments like removable denture, crown and bridge and dental implants. Removable denture is not suitable for all however, it is an economical option.

In fixed prosthesis, crown and bridge is one of the options in which adjacent two teeth are shaved to get a new tooth. However, dental implants are the best option to replace the natural tooth in missing space.

What if it is a baby tooth?

Avulsed baby teeth follow the same procedure like in permanent teeth. You can put sterile gauze or cotton in the mouth if it bleeds. You also can try to put that tooth into the mouth till you reach the dental clinic.

Losing of baby teeth is a normal part of growth but losing them too early can cause problems. Adjacent or opposite teeth can replace the missing space which can lead to crowding of teeth. So, a permanent tooth may not have enough room to erupt in the mouth in the right direction. In such cases, a space maintainer is recommended to maintain the space.

In general, if you lose your tooth through an accident do not get stressed. The above measurements will surely help you to get the solution quickly and again you will have a new restored tooth.
