When we talked about sensitivity it is very important to find out the reason to recommend treatment.

Primary factors for teeth sensitivity:

Gums disease: Gums inflammation caused by plaque and tartar formation over the time. In the beginning it starts as a redness, gums bleeding and sensitivity. As the problem is not resolved for a longer period gums start receding and patients start to feel severe sensitivity.

Treatment: For mild to moderate cases regular cleaning and polishing followed by gums astringent and desensitizer local application is enough. In case of gums recession application of dental varnish or tooth colored filling needs to be done.

Bruxism/ Teeth grinding: Teeth grinding is a common habit we observe in so many patients. Due to this continued pressure teeth start to wear and remove enamel which exposes underlying dentine. Exposed teeth start feeling sensation to hot and cold.

Treatment: Best treatment is to wear a well fitted nightguard. It’s useful as a habit breaker and also prevents further loss of tooth structure. Teeth which are already destroyed need dental treatment.

Over brushing: A vigorous brushing habit also causes loss of enamel structure over the time.

Treatment: Change your toothbrush in every 3 months. Use soft or extra soft brush with proper technique.

Severe acidity or frequent consumption of acidic beverages: chronic acid reflux disease or acidic food.

Is harmful to the teeth. It will remove the healthy layer of teeth.

Treatment: Need to consult a physician to treat acidity. Stop consuming very sour food. Also make a habit of rinsing mouth after consumption of such beverages.

Poor oral hygiene: Good brushing habits are necessary to prevent dental problems. Accumulation of plaque and tartar invite gums issues as well as cause dental caries. If you ignore this for a long time it leads to more complicated dental problems.

Treatment: Twice a day brushing and flossing. Regular dental checkup and dental cleaning every 6 months.

Fractured teeth or dental filling: Fractured fragments always give trouble due to exposed teeth surface.

Treatment: Replacement of old filling. Dental filling or root canal treatment in case of exposed nerve.

Teeth whitening procedure: Teeth whitening, or bleaching treatment might cause temporary sensitivity.

Treatment: If you are already suffering from sensitivity then teeth whitening might not be a good option for you. There are multiple options available for whitening products and some are highly acidic so it is better to choose a good, professional whitening product.

Dental Procedure: It is very common to feel slight uneasiness after dental procedure like filling, RCT, Dental crown, extraction and even after teeth cleaning.

Treatment: Dentists will prescribe you desensitizer toothpaste or analgesic tablet according to need. If you have a problem persisting for a longer time it’s better to consult with a dentist.
