Causes of Missing teeth

1. Congenital absence
It is not uncommon for a tooth or teeth to be congenitally absent. Most commonly, the primary (baby) tooth is present
2. Trauma
Accidents or injuries can knock out teeth or lead to teeth fractures that may necessitate extraction of involved teeth
3. Dental Diseases
The most common cause of tooth loss is Gum disease (Periodontal disease) which is actually a localized infection in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth leading to tooth loss. Dental caries/decay is the second most common dental cause of tooth loss wherein extent of the advanced decay makes the tooth non restorable and necessitates extraction resulting in tooth loss.
Problems that come with missing teeth and need to replace them
1. Problems with eating
Fewer teeth will make it difficult for you to chew your food properly and hence might force you to avoid eating certain foods mainly hard and crunchy food. This might lead to malnutrition in the  elderly patients
2. Misaligned teeth
If there is a gap because of missing teeth, other teeth may shift in the space and result in misalignment of the arch leading to improper bite. It also affects the way your jaw will open and close during chewing and other functional activities and may put undue stress on the jaw joint leading to jaw pain in some individuals.
3. Affects your speech
Your ability to speak is determined by the flow of air into the mouth which affects your pronunciation of various words and phrases. Any gaps such as those caused by missing teeth disrupt these normal airflows which then affect the quality of your speech.
4. Psychological effects
Missing teeth especially in esthetic areas can severely affect your self confidence making you more self conscious about the way your look and can lead to reluctance to smile especially in social situations.
5. Bone deterioration at the site of missing teeth
Tooth loss leads to reduction in bone density and bone volume at the involved site. The Deterioration progresses further is if the tooth is  not replaced soon after its loss.
