What is Dental Crown?
A dental crown is actually a tooth - shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth to cover to restore its shape, size, strength and improve its appearance.

Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?

These are some of the situations where a crown may be needed:

  • To strengthen a decayed tooth after the decay is removed.
  • To strengthen broken or cracked tooth
  • To strengthen root canal treated tooth
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To improve esthetic appearance of severely misshapen or discolored tooth
  • To cover an implant abutment

Types of crowns available

Types of crowns vary depending upon the material used in their fabrication.

Stainless steel:

These crowns are usually prefabricated and are used as a temporary measures for adult patients and could be a permanent options for children’s baby teeth

Metals crowns:

Metals used in crowns include gold alloy, other alloys (for example, palladium), or a base-metal alloy (for example, nickel or chromium). The main disadvantage of these metallic crowns is ten appearance of metallic color so not suitable for teeth in the esthetic zone.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns:

These are metallic crowns with Porcelain fused to match the shade of natural tooth. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth.

All-ceramic or all-porcelain Crowns:

These crowns provide maximum esthetic outcome but are not as strong as metallic crowns.

Crowns_and_Bridges
Dental bridge is actually fixed, non removable prosthetic device that bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth in the mouth. It is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and false teeth in between spanning the gap.

Fixed Dental bridges Vs. Dental Implants:

Crowns_and_Bridges
For a long time, fixed dental bridges have been the treatment of choice for people with missing teeth because of the esthetically pleasing appearance and quick results achieved by them.

Some of the Disadvantages of fixed bridges are as follows:

Types of crowns vary depending upon the material used in their fabrication.

Must grind or shave the supporting teeth on either side of missing teeth

Possible need for root canal treatment for supporting teeth

Risk of dental decay under the bridge

It requires strict oral hygiene measures such as using super floss under the
bridge to maintain plaque free environment

Cost Breakdown: Implants Vs. Bridge

All-ceramic or all-porcelain Crowns:

At first, it appears that a bridge is the more economical route, with total fees for a typical implant starting higher. But when comparing cost versus value, dental implant is more cost effective and better long term treatment option - if the patient is a candidate for implants.
